Most small to mid-size businesses don’t know where to start when it comes to selecting a marketing agency that best fits their needs.

As with most businesses, just like people, they come in all different shapes and sizes. Marketing agencies are not one-size fits all, type of a decision.

If you are a start-up, solopreneur, small to midsize business or a business with under 500 employees, it’s going to be difficult for you to find the right marketing agency, right out of the gate.

Having a marketing budget of any size won’t help you either. Most marketing agencies are only interested in selling you the most expensive types of advertising at their disposal. Usually billboards, radio, television, or SEO packages coupled with social media management.

Go ahead and Google Marketing Agency right now. What you’ll most likely find are larger based firms probably not even based in your city. And if they are, they fall into the category of standard marketing principles based solely on budgets.

The marketing world, especially online marketing has changed dramatically in the last 12 months. It’s almost impossible for a business owner or manager to figure it out on their own, the best way to penetrate their local market. One bad investment with no R.O.I. can kill a budget for the rest of the year.

Most business owners are too busy working in their business rather than working on their business. They rely on marketing experts to help them make money. Not just spend it.

It’s a reality and sometimes, they put their trust in marketing agencies that don’t always have their best interest at heart.

My recommendation: Use a local marketing agency to help jump start your marketing efforts and revamp your old one. Like I mentioned earlier, the online marketing game has changed in the last 12 months.

What was working a year ago, may already be outdated and not reaping your business the benefits it once did. Some marketing agencies push nothing but SEO. Others try to sell you a website tied down by SEO and some social media management.

I’m not saying this is bad, it’s just stagnate in my opinion.

You have to understand that social media doesn’t make you any money. Sure it will give your customers a window to peak into your business, but ask yourself if that generates any income.

I’m still on board with social media management, but believe it needs to be done in tandem with other strategies to have an impact.

Reputation Management is now obsolete. Some businesses are so focused on trying to NOT receive bad reviews, they get tripped up and forget they still need to market their business. Receiving an alert or weekly report that you received a bad review does not make you money.

Especially if your staff hasn’t been trained on what to do, after you’ve received it. Remember, once something is online, like a bad review, it’s near impossible to remove it on your own.

So what type of marketing will make your business money almost overnight?

Answer: Reputation Marketing

What is Reputation Marketing?

According to Wikipedia Reputation Marketing is a field that has evolved from the marriage of the fields of Reputation Management and Brand Marketing.

Gone are the days of only being concerned about your brand and or only your online ‘reviews.’ Remember, reputation management and social media management don’t make you any money.

So when you start searching for a marketing agency to help you, start local and make sure they have a firm grasp of Reputation Marketing.

A quick online Google search with the key words local marketing expert and your city, is a good place to start. Just make sure that the company is actual local. Keep in mind, just because they used the word ‘local’ in their name, doesn’t necessarily mean so.

Why try a local company or expert first?

Answer: Because they usually have a better feel for the local market, people, and business climate. They usually know what works best for your industry and can get you more bang for your buck!
