Social media is the new medium for all things ‘advertising’ and it’s not going away. The average person now looks at their smartphone an average of 8 hours a day. And when they do watch television, it’s on their time, because they recorded their program on the DVR. Outside of live sporting events.
Then they skip through all of the commercials. So, if you’re buying T.V. commercials, guess what…? They’re probably not being seen.
All eyes are on the smartphone and in particularly, social media.
And your local business needs to have a presence there in some fashion.

In this article I’m going to focus on the two most important aspects of social media marketing. Attracting more new customers and telling your brand story.
Attracting new customers is my number one reason why you would spend time, money and effort into a social media campaign. It’s great to connect with your customer’s on a deeper level, but if you’re not generating revenue, then the rest doesn’t matter.
I find that most business owners, doctors, attorneys, and other professionals are so involved with their business, they don’t have the time to really dedicate to their social media marketing.
I can’t tell you how many doctors’ offices that I know, leave the task of their social media management, to the office manager. And most of the time, this manager doesn’t have the slightest clue of what to post, when to post, or how often to post.
It’s usually trial by fire. They’ll start posting anything and everything and cross their fingers that something works.
99% of the time, nothing happens and their efforts are wasted. The whole point should be to try to get more new patients into the office to see the doctor.
And this goes on in a lot of other businesses too. Not just doctors’ offices.
The end result is most local business owners will say, “Social Media doesn’t work!” And the truth is, it was never executed correctly from the beginning.
The facts show that social media marketing does work! If done correctly. Dollar for dollar there is no other advertising medium that has a better R.O.I. Most social media platforms are selling their impressions for pennies on the dollar.
If you have ever watched the ABC show Shark Tank you’ll see what I mean. During the pitch to the sharks, when a business is already doing well and they are asked the question of how they have sold so many number of X product or service, the number one answer is always “social media.”
If it can work for them, it can work for your local business too.
Do what works!
I would advise any and all local business owners and managers to embrace social media. Dive in head first and learn as much as you can. And if you don’t have the time, hire a social media agency that specializes in helping local businesses grow.
Sure, you can hire the local radio station to market your business online, but the truth is, that they are probably going to outsource this task to another business, in another country. They really don’t personalize the post and they are not authentic.
Some of the time, the person writing the content for your post, English is not their first language, and some things get lost in translation.
And the public knows it. They are also not going to design specific advertising campaigns to get you more new customers. Most, don’t know how.
You need to hire a social media expert that can come into your business, in person, who takes photos of your office or establishment, and makes recommendations of what types of campaigns that should be run specifically for your type of business.
Not all social platforms work the same and your business does not need to be on every one of them. A good social media expert will help you determine what platform your business should utilize to attract the most eyeballs and engagement.
I also love social media to help tell your brand story. People buy from people they like, know and trust. And just because you are using a digital platform to introduce your business to them, doesn’t mean you can’t show them who you really are and what you stand for as a company. Consumers want to know the company/person they are buying from.
This is how you help build long lasting relationships with your buyers.
I recommend to all local businesses to invest in a getting a professional video made, telling the story about you, your brand, and what your philosophy on business is… Once it’s done, upload the video to the splash page of your website.
This video should be one of the first things a person sees when they visit your website. And remember, you can always post this video on your YouTube channel, Facebook page and other platforms.
A good social media agency can help you produce this video as well. If they can’t help you produce this video, you’re working with the wrong agency.
In order for your business to grow, you have to invest in its growth. And I’m sure that with a strong social media marketing strategy, you’ll accomplish all of your goals.
